Facebook (Meta), Snap and Twitter are struggling while a new group of social media platforms is emerging to supplant their dominion. Is Farcaster going to be that next top-tier platform that consumes our time and attention?

What is Farcaster?

The farcaster is a social graph protocol, which enables applications to connect with one another and users via decentralized technologies like blockchains, p2p networks and distributed ledgers. The goal of farcaster is to decentralize the control over your social graph and enable applications to form relationships with one another and share information about users without having to go through centralized servers owned by corporations like Facebook or Google.

Farcaster is a platform for building decentralized social networks. It’s not just a protocol and API, but also sets of tools for developers to build on, and a hub for applications that are built on the farcaster protocol.

How is farcaster different from other social networks?

Farcaster is a decentralized social network that uses the blockchain to manage identity and data. It’s an open source project, meaning anyone can use it to build their own apps (like the Facebook alternative you’ve been waiting for).

It’s also a protocol — not just a platform. This means Farcaster is more than just a single app like Instagram or Twitter. Rather, it’s an identity layer for applications of all kinds — chat, payments, browsing history tracking… anything you can think of.

Because Farcaster is decentralized and open-source, anyone can develop an application within its ecosystem by plugging into the network via APIs or other interfaces. These dApps will run on top of Farcaster technology and leverage its infrastructure to deliver functionality that provides value for users who want something different from what centralized services provide today, especially in areas of identity and privacy.

What is a protocol?

I’ve been throwing the word protocol around, but it may not give you a sense of what it actually is. Basically, a protocol is a set of rules that computers use to communicate with each other. In this case, the protocol is called HTTP, which stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol.

HTTP defines how data is transmitted and interpreted between two devices on the internet. It ensures that your messages are processed correctly by the network without errors or miscommunications.

The best way to understand this is to think about an old-fashioned phone call — you dial someone’s number and hear their voice come through your receiver. This works because there are protocols in place so you can tell where you start speaking and where they end up listening: you know when it’s their turn because they don’t interrupt if they don’t get any response from me after I’ve finished speaking; they know they’re done talking when I hang up at the end of my sentence.

What are Farcaster Hubs

Farcaster hubs are API-based apps that allow people to create applications that leverage the resources of other apps within the same ecosystem (e.g., you could use an app like Instagram without having to have an Instagram account).

These hubs are also open source, meaning that anyone can create a hub and develop apps to run on it. You can think of each hub as an operating system for the internet — it’s a place where people come together and build applications from scratch.

What really makes Farcaster unique?

To understand the Farcaster, it’s important to understand what it isn’t.

  • Farcaster is not an application or product. It is a protocol that can be used to build applications and products. This means that any developer, large or small, can use farcaster as the basis for their next social network or communication platform.
  • The protocol itself is not proprietary, meaning that any developer can read the code and see how it works. It’s also built using WebRTC technology, which means that it will work in all browsers (including mobile) without any plugins or extensions.
  • There are no central servers or data centers for anyone to hack or take offline. All the users have control over their own data and can decide what happens with it. Now all users have control over their own data and can decide what happens with it.

Other Important attributes

Farcaster is a social media platform that has many key attributes, including:

  • No ads or data mining
  • No mining of any kind
  • No tracking or walled gardens
  • Server farms are not required

Downsides

Adoption by the masses could be slow since there could be a host of applications that are built from its technology. It’s not a technology that’s easy to understand if you’re not already familar with some crypto-based technologies. It will take time for people to be comfortable with the idea of sharing their social graph with third parties.

If you’re a user, you don’t have much control over your data. It’s up to developers and marketers to decide what they do with it. If you think about how Facebook uses your data for marketing purposes (like targeting ads based on your interests), Farcaster could be used in similar ways — but without any oversight from the government or from users themselves.

Right now, Farcaster is experimental and unproven. We don’t know if it will work for for specific use cases. It’s possible that developers may not want to share their user data with advertisers, since they have so much of it already. But we think that in the long run, developers will see the value of allowing marketers access to their users’ social graphs — and they’ll build Farcaster support into their apps.

Farcaster’s mission is to take back the power of your social graph, and using identity and decentralized technologies to bring that graph to the applications built on its platform.

It attempts to incorporate the best features of all existing social networks into one. It’s decentralized, so it’s not controlled by any one entity. It also gives users control over their own content and identity, which means they can build a reputation based on who they are online as opposed to what they post or like.
